The Manhattan Recorder Orchestra (MRO), conducted by Matthias Maute, consists of twenty-three experienced recorder players, including professionals and semi-professionals. Based in New York City, the orchestra was organized in 2003 and made its concert debut in January 2004 at St. John's in the Village Episcopal Church in Greenwich Village. Most members reside in or close to New York City and others travel from Connecticut, New Jersey and as far away as Pennsylvania and Montreal. Instruments range in size from the tiny sopranino to the contrabass recorder. During the last two years, MRO has presented several concerts in New York, performed at the 2004 Montreal Recorder Festival and the first New York Early Music Celebration during "Recorder Celebration Day". The orchestra's repertoire consists of early music, arrangements of classical, romantic and twentieth century music, and of contemporary works specifically composed for recorder orchestra--new music which demonstrates the little-known versatility of the recorder. At its most recent concert, the orchestra performed two works for recorder orchestra composed by MRO members David Hurd and Charlie Gamble. MRO's concert in March 2006 will include the world premiere of a newly-commissioned piece entitled "A Sea in the Pond", composed by conductor Matthias Maute. Other plans include a joint concert in New York in May 2006 with the Canadian recorder orchestra, Flutissimo, conducted by Sophie Larivière.
